As it is coming up to the summer months, we will be looking at doing some invasive species management along the river banks throughout the catchment. This involves the identification and removal of plant species such as Himalayan Balsam that are not native to the UK, and identification of Giant Hogweed as it’s sap can be dangerous to our skin. The sap reduces the photosensitivity of our skin, making us more vulnerable to sever sunburns. It is important we learn about these different species for when we are out doing practical work.

We have arranged a training session around INNS which is being delivered by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust. Listed below are the details:

Location: Potteric Carr nature reserve in Doncaster (DN4 8DB)

When: Monday 22nd April from 1pm to 4pm

    The session will cover:

    • Intro to Invasive species and how to identify them
    • How to survey and record invasive non-native species
    • How to use Yorkshire Wildlife Trust’s INNS Mapper to prioritise treatment in the Don Catchment
    • Overview of last year’s INNS treatment in the Don Catchment.
    • Biosecurity – What is it? Why is it important?

It is free to attend and we will provide refreshments. We can also cover the cost of travel and will have expense forms available to fill out on the day. Simply ensure you keep hold of a travel receipt if it is public transport, or the mileage if it is by car.

If you’re interested in attending this training, please fill out this form and send it to [email protected]. Please submit your interest by Friday 19th April.
