Join the Don Catchment Rivers Trust alongside Rotherham Council, as we help to remove the invasive plant species Himalayan Balsam from the banks of the Pinch Mill Brook in Whiston. 

 

When: Friday 8th August 10am-1pm

 

Where: We will be meeting on the lay by, adjacent to the fishing ponds of Pinchmill Fishery (Pinchmill Farm, Wickersley, Rotherham S60 4NJ)

What to bring: We provide all of the equipment on the day however please wear suitable clothing for outdoor work including sturdy shoes or boots and long trousers. Even if it is warm weather, it is advisable to cover up to protect against spiky plants and stings. We can provide wellingtons to borrow on the day but please let us know in advance by emailing [email protected] to ensure we have your size. 

 

What to expect: We will be walking along the paths along the river, pulling up Himalayan Balsam and leaving it in piles once we have snaped or crushed it below the bottom node. We will have a break at for refreshments and biscuits, provided by DCRT.

    Join the Don Catchment Rivers Trust at Priory Farm in Renishaw to build leaky barriers across the brook and floodplain. As water levels in the brook rise during heavy rainfall, they will hit the leaky barriers, back up behind them and spill into safe spaces in the floodplain, creating temporary storage of flood flows. Spaces are limited so please book on to this event using the link below.

     

    PLEASE NOTE: This event is weather dependent as the site floods. If it has been, or is forecast to be wet, we may need to postpone. We will contact you if this is the case.

     

    Task: Creating leaky barriers using hand tools (e.g. hand saws, loppers, maul) and lifting aids (e.g. timber tongs and log lifters) to prepare, move and fix logs into position.

    What to bring: We provide all of the equipment on the day but please wear suitable clothing for outdoor work including long sleeves and trousers that you don’t mind getting muddy! Waterproofs are also worth bringing if you have them. Steel toe wellies will be required which we will provide but you’re welcome to bring your own if you have them. We will also provide refreshments and biscuits for a tea break but please bring water and any other food you may need.

    Join the Don Catchment Rivers Trust as we team up with Sheffield City Council to put mulch down around the trees we planted back in January. This is in Linley Bank Meadows (within Shire Brook Valley Nature Reserve). We will be hauling mulch out of the truck and putting it around the trees to suppress weeds, keep moisture locked in the soil, and it rots down to feed the trees. Please note this event can be postponed in the event of bad weather, please let us know if you intend on attending so we can update you.

     

    When: Wednesday 26th March, 10am-12pm

     

    Where: We will be meeting at the nature reserve car park just off Beighton Road. It has locked gates which will be open for our group.
