Join the Don Catchment Rivers Trust as we are guided round Rivelin Valley by the talented local forager, Shony (see her Facebook page here). Come along and learn about plant identification in this lovely river corridor. The event will operate via sign ups as we have limited spaces available. Priority will be given to existing volunteers but all are welcome. Please read the information below and sign up using the Eventbrite link below. 

Details of the event from Shony:

"We will be learning native plant identification skills, which ones are delicious and edible, and how to cook or use them. Also how to harvest with respect and care for the insects and other animals that live on them too. Also I will be covering a little about non-native invasives, like Himalayan Balsam, and how we can combat them. A few highlights should be edible trees such as Wych Elm, and Linden (European Lime), and salad greens like Common Sorrel and Bush Vetch. Medicinal herbs will play a large part too, though we will have to see what's out. Wild vegetables for cooking, like Garlic Mustard and Common Hogweed will be making an appearance for sure! Plus a few of our local toxic plant species to watch out for and avoid. And if we are lucky, there will be a few edible mushrooms around too, like the Dryads Saddle, depending on how the season is going."

There is free parking here and the nearby tram stop at Malin Bridge. 

What to bring: Shony will be leading the walk and there is no equipment needed. Please wear suitable clothing for being outdoors including sturdy shoes. We can provide wellingtons to borrow on the day if you'd prefer but please let us know in advance by emailing [email protected] to ensure we have your size. 

What to expect: We will be walking along the paths of the river, stopping to look at various plants. Refreshments will be provided by DCRT at the end of the walk, biscuits included! Shony will give us the option of a couple of routes through Rivelin dependent on people's preference. The walk should be no longer than 1.5 miles.
