Swinton Breks Volunteer Day – Friends of the Don Valley Way

Join the Friends of the Don VAlley Way as we remove litter from the Swinton Breks and remove overgrown vegetation from the foot path.

We will be meeting at 10am just off Lawrence Drive and finishing at 1pm. Half way through there will be a break for refreshments. Please weafr suitable clothing for outdoor work. If you would like to borrow waders or Wellingtons they will be provided on the day.

    Join the Don Catchment Rivers Trust as we help to remove the invasive plant species Himalayan Balsam from the inlet to the Scout Dike reservoir, in the upstream catchment of the River Don. 

    When: Tuesday 17th June, 10am - 1pm

     

    Where: We will be meeting at the reservoir car park on Huddersfield Road, Penistone, Thurlstone, Sheffield S36 7GF

    Parking info: There is free car parking at the Barnsley Trout Club/Scout Dike reservoir car park however it does get busy. There is a layby parking down the A629 (Halifax Road) that is a short walk away (see Google Maps here). Please do not park in the lorry turning space (see Google Maps here) or else you will get towed away. 

     

    What to expect: We will be working along the footpaths of Scout Dike reservoir, pulling up Himalayan Balsam and leaving it in piles once we have snaped or crushed it below the bottom node. We will have a break at for refreshments and biscuits, provided by DCRT.

     

    What to bring: We provide all of the equipment on the day however please wear suitable clothing for outdoor work including sturdy shoes or boots and long trousers. Even if it is warm weather, it is advisable to cover up to protect against spiky plants and stings.     NOTE: This event has been cancelled due to the growth of Japanese Knotweed on site which we do not want to spread via any disturbance caused by balsam bashing. 

     

    Join the Don Catchment Rivers Trust alongside Springvale Community Garden, as we help to remove the invasive plant species Himalayan Balsam from the gardens alongside the River Don.

    When: Wednesday 18th June, 10am to 2pm

     

    Where: LOCATION UPDATED Please meet inside the gates to the Community Garden, S36 6HH. They are located just off Sheffield Road, next to the Springvale Household Waste Recycling Centre. Turn off Sheffield Road when you see Rascalz Play. Parking is available outside the gate.

    What to expect: We will be working in the Community Garden's Riverside Nature Reserve, pulling up Himalayan Balsam and leaving it in piles once we have snaped or crushed it below the bottom node. There are no toilets immediately on site but there are facilities in the Community Garden, which is a 12 minute walk around.
