    Join the Friends of the Don Valley Way as we litter pick the tow path along the canal near Holmes Lock.

    On the day we will be meeting at 10am and finishing at 1pm. We will complete a risk assessment on the day to ensure the safety of all volunteers. We will be stopping half way through for a tea break. On the day you will need to bring appropriate outdoor clothing and sturdy footwear. We can provide wellingtons and waders however we won’t be able to provide footwear for every volunteer.

  • Waymarking and cleanup Day – Don Valley Way

    Task: Join the Friends of the Don Valley Way for a volunteer Day in Swinton, Rotherham
    We will be starting with an hours litter pick at Swinton Dike, followed by a tea-break and then go on to waymark the Swinton Heritage Walk.

     

    Location: We will be meeting on the playing fields at Swinton Dike
    Please park in the spaces on North Street ( S64 8AZ) by the allotments. From North street head up the footpath between the allotments to the playing fields where we will start our event.

    What to bring: Please wear suitable outdoor clothing and footwear on the day.

    What to bring: We will provide all necessary equipment and refreshments. All you need to wear is appropriate outdoor clothing (waterproof, long sleeves and trousers) and sturdy shoes. Also feel free to bring your own pair of wellies/waders if you have them. We will have a range of sizes to borrow but can’t guarantee a pair for everyone. 

    Tasks vary but include: Woody debris installation, scrub control/wetland management, access improvements, natural flood management.

  • Ickles Lock Tree-planting Volunteer Day

    Join the Friends of the Don Valley Way and Rotherham Council for a day of tree-planting at Ickles Lock. We’ll be planting small trees onto a grassland area. The trees are a mixture of native species that will act to support wildlife and provide new woodland habitat at the site. These trees will also help soak up and intercept rainwater, helping to ‘slow the flow’ of water into the navigation during high rainfall events.

     

    Times: 10am-1pm
    Date: Tuesday 23rd November

    Where: We are meeting at the small car park off Brinsworth street. Go over the level crossing, then over the bridge over the canal and it’s the second right into the car park.

  • Underwater Photography Training

    Join DCRT for a training day on how to use underwater cameras to film aquatic species.

     

    We will be getting into the water to learn how to set up and place underwater cameras (GoPros) in order to get the best footage using pole mounted and weighted cameras. We will be mainly capturing video footage. There is a possibility of reaching into the water so attendees may wish to bring a spare change of clothing. All other necessary equipment will be provided by DCRT.

     

    Training will happen on Tuesday 30th November at Somersall Park, Chesterfield – 10am – 12pm.

     

    If attendees enjoy this training there will be more opportunties to use our equipment for future projects.

     

    This training session will be led by Matt Duffy (fishery habitat officer) and Sally Hyslop (community engagement officer).

  • Swinton Breks Volunteer Day – Friends of the Don Valley Way

    Join the Friends of the Don VAlley Way as we remove litter from the Swinton Breks and remove overgrown vegetation from the foot path.

    We will be meeting at 10am just off Lawrence Drive and finishing at 1pm. Half way through there will be a break for refreshments. Please weafr suitable clothing for outdoor work. If you would like to borrow waders or Wellingtons they will be provided on the day.
