  • Carlisle Street – Volunteer Day

    Join the Friends of the Don Valley Way as we litter pick along the footpaths of the River Don at Carlisle Street in Swinton.

    On the day we will be meeting at 10am and finishing at 1pm. We will complete a risk assessment on the day to ensure the safety of all volunteers. We will be stopping half way through for a tea break. On the day you will need to bring appropriate outdoor clothing and sturdy footwear. We can provide wellingtons and waders however we won’t be able to provide footwear for every volunteer.

    Tasks: River & vegetation surveys

    Timing: 10am – 3pm

    We will be carrying out surveys around the leaky barriers we’ve been installing/will be installing to slow flows during heavy rainfall to help us get a better understanding of if and how these barriers influence the vegetation around the dams and the river channel. Training will be given on the day and though some experience of plant ID would be helpful, it’s not essential. All welcome!

    Sturdy footwear, long sleeves, trousers and waterproofs are recommended. All other equipment will be provided.

    There are a limited number of spaces available so you will need to book on to this session in advance.

  • Brook Explorers: Bug Hunting at Grassmoor

    Join the DCRT team for an afternoon of family-friendly bug hunting! Spend some time in Grassmoor’s beautiful wildflower meadow and look for butterflies, beetles and beasties!

    About this event

    Little ones and parents can learn together during our family-friendly bug hunting sessions. Activities are suitable for children of age 4-11 years and children must be supported by a guardian or parent during the session.

    • BUG HUNT: Explore the meadow using our equipment and wildlife identification guides – can you complete our minibeast challenge?
    • CRAFTS: Make some bug peg-puppets to take home with you or colour a beautiful bug mask!

    Sessions are 1 hour long. Families can drop by and leave any time during their pre-booked session. Just come to our stall to sign in and out

    Tickets are free of charge, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund

  • Butterfly Survey at Grassmoor

    Help us monitor the butterflies at Grassmoor country park.
    Volunteers will follow a set transect line across the park, counting, identifying and recording what butterfly and moth species they spot.

    Butterfly surveys are only carried out on bright sunny days so be prepared for this event to be cancelled in rainy weather.
    Because of this, we are asking all volunteers to sign up for the event – email [email protected] to come along!

    When: Thursday 4th and Thursday 18th August, 10am-12pm

    Where: Grassmoor Country Park, meeting on the south car park off Birkin Lane, S42 5DA (parking is free)

    About this event

    Little ones and parents can learn together during our family friendly river dipping sessions.

    • Explore the river using our equipment and wildlife identification guides
    • Make a dragonfly to take home
    • Make a boat out of recycled materials to race down the river

    Children and parents will need wellington boots to explore the river (no crocs or bare feet please). bringing a change of socks and spare clothes is recommended!

    Sessions are 1 hour long and require booking a free place. The boat race will be held at the end of the session.

    Families can drop by and leave any time during their pre-booked session.

    Help us investigate water quality in Grassmoor Country park!
    We’ll be assessing the water quality at 4 sites, building up a picture of what type of pollution is found at the park and where it might be coming from

    When: Thursday 11th and Thursday 25th August, 10am-12pm (plus the opportunity to carry on volunteering over the year)
    If any of the sites are dried up we may finish early

There’s so much to get involved with over the weekend with exhibitions from some fantastic creatives, so make sure to check out the programme  (click here) and get yourself booked on for some events.

    We are most looking forward to Inari Wishiki’s performance at Hexthorpe  Rowing Club, involving a hand-made coracle that will cross the river (click here to book) and spotting Chris Dobrowolski’s rickshaw made out of river Don rubbish. You’ll also find us at the Step & Stoop outdoor conversations on Saturday in the town centre, plus much more!
