  • Where does all that litter go? Waste & Recycling Tour
    10:00 -12:00
    13-11-18
32 Bolton Rd, Wath upon Dearne, Rotherham S63 7JY, UK

So where does all that litter we pick from the riverside go? The vast majority of it is taken away by Streetpride and delivered to the BDR Waste Treatment Facility. This award-winning plant extracts any remaining recyclable materials from household waste and turns what’s left into fuel for low carbon electricity! The facility diverts around 95% of waste from landfill, making a significant carbon dioxide saving.

Shanks, who have also funded the LHRD project, have organised a tour of the BDR waste facility so we can see this whole process in action!

If you would like to come along on the 10am-12pm tour please email [email protected] or get in touch with one of the team via text. We will need to know your shoe size and jacket size (S, M, L, XL, 2XL) in advance so that Shanks can organise our safety clothing for the day. Parking is limited at Shanks so we will also be organising car-shares.

  • The River Project: Categories of Life and Death Exhibition
    All day
    22-11-18-29-11-18

200 years ago, when Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein was first published, uncertainty surrounded categories of life and death, with a widely held belief that death could be cured.

With a focus on the outer edges of Sheffield, where a derelict Victorian Cemetery meets the River Don, The River Project explores notions of creation, destruction, rebirth and the soul. Students of Sheffield College in collaboration with artist Eelyn Lee re-present their expansive research of the area, conducted over 7-weeks in Autumn 2018.

Drawings, prints, photographs, video, sound, text and found objects are assembled together with images of monsters and stories of fear to form an exploded map of the River Don.

To mark the Bicententary of the publication of Frankenstein, there will be a special outdoor screening of the film, Categories of Life and Death in Wardsend Cemetery on Monday 26 November, 6pm – 7.30pm.

Commissioned by DCRT and Site Gallery. Delivered in partnership with Sheffield College and Wardsend Cemetery.

Shot on location in the cemetery and the neighbouring River Don, the film imagines a meeting of the Celtic goddess Danu and a creature of her making. Devised by students from Sheffield College in collaboration with Eelyn Lee, the film touches on themes of pollution and renewal.

The film forms part of The River Project exhibition, displayed in the Site Gallery Project Space 22 – 29 November 2018.

The 5-minute film will play on a loop and free soup will be served, so drop in at any point.
