  • Wildlife Wednesdays – Moss Valley

    Join Don Catchment Rivers Trust volunteer days aimed at restoring the riverine environment. All abilities welcome!

    Timings: 10am – 3pm with a break for lunch and refreshments. Feel free to come to part of the day if required. 

    What to bring: We will provide all necessary equipment and refreshments. All you need to wear is appropriate outdoor clothing and sturdy shoes.

    Tasks include: We will be concentrating on removing the invasive weed Himalayan Balsam all along the Moss catchment by pulling up the plant which has very shallow root systems.

    Location: The meeting point will change each week depending on how far along the river we have made progress. Sign-up as a volunteer under ‘catchment volunteer’ here to receive updated meeting points.

    Location: Meet at the junction of Camlough Walk and Wain Ave, Chesterfield S41 0FD. 

    What to bring: We will provide all necessary equipment and refreshments. All you need to wear is appropriate outdoor clothing and sturdy shoes.

    Tasks include: Litter picking, debris removal, vegetation maintenance, invasive species management and access improvements.

    Timings: Day runs 10am – 1pm but feel free to come whenever suits. We have a tea break around 11.30am.

    Join the Friends of the Don Valley Way as they pick the litter from the tow path past Ickles Lock.

  • Hidden Heritage Secret Streams BIOBLITZ

    Breck Farm Watermeadows is a special and rarely explored local wildlife site in Chesterfield. Join scientists and nature experts to count all the crawlies, critters and creatures we can find before the clock runs out!

    Activities include:

    • Kid’s & Family Bug Hunting
    • River Dipping
    • Identify your finds at our identification station
    • Identifying living organisms with DNA
    • 1pm-1.45pm: Rewilding the Rother Guided Walk with Ed Shaw (please book a place by emailing [email protected])  

    Parking, toilets and refreshments at Barrow Hill Memorial Hall (S43 2PG) with a short walk (10-15 mins) to the Bioblitz near Hall Lane (see poster below)

    Please note this is a wild site, so is sadly not accessible to those with mobility issues or pushchairs. Please wear suitable shoes and clothing for an outdoor event. Under 16’s must be accompanied by an adult guardian.

  • River Hipper & Spital Cemetery Bat Walk

    Find out about some of the winged visitors to the cemetery, when the sun goes down. We will be using bat detectors to listen to the bat’s calls as they hunt for insects!

     

    Sally Hyslop will be leading a Bat Walk in Spital Cemetery and for a short way along the Rother and Hipper Rivers. Booking is essential as numbers are limited. Please email [email protected] to book.

     

    We will meet at the Tool House (53.232169, -1.415337) which is a short distance inside the cemetery from the top gates (53.232770, -1.414984). Parking is available on Cemetery Road and inside the cemetery along the avenue of lime trees which lead from the Top Gates to the Chapels. Please wear sturdy shoes. Children are welcome, but must be accompanied by an adult. 

     

    This walk is free but donations to the work of the Friends of Spital Cemetery would be gratefully received. Refreshments will be available.

  • Chesterfield Walking Festival: Moss Brook

    Join the Don Catchment Rivers Trust for a walk around the Moss Brook (in association with the Moss Valley Wildlife Group). The Moss Brook is known for its interesting mix of natural and industrial heritage, and the walk will be an approximately 4 mile circular route around the valley.

    The brook once powered eight water wheels when it was an important centre for the grinding of scythes and sickles. On the walk we will see one of the dams (Never Fear Dam), close to Ford. Also, we will stop to see ‘Seldom Seen Engine House’. This Scheduled Ancient Monument is the last remaining building from Plumbley Collieries.

    The Moss Valley is also a very important place for wildlife and plants, with much of the valley designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Keep a look out for the rich variety of wildflowers and listen out for the birds that make the valley their home.

    The walk starts and finishes at The Moss Brook Inn, Eckington. Parking is available for patrons, and the inn will be open for you purchase lunch or refreshments if you wish.
