  • River Rescue Chapel on the Bridge

    Join the Friends of the Don Valley Way as we work to clear in and around the Don at Chapel on the Bridge in Rotherham.

    On the day we will be meeting at 10am and finishing at 1pm. We will complete a risk assessment on the day to ensure the safety of all volunteers. We will be stopping half way through for a tea break. On the day you will need to bring appropriate outdoor clothing and sturdy footwear. We can provide wellingtons and waders however we won’t be able to provide footwear for every volunteer.

  • Wildlife Wednesdays – Moss Valley

    Join Don Catchment Rivers Trust for a volunteer day removing the invasive weed Himalayan Balsam from the Moss Brook Catchment. All abilities welcome!

    If you would like to join our events and are new to the Trust, please email [email protected] to get signed up!

    Location: Please note, the location may change each week so you need to email [email protected] for details each week of where we are meeting.

    What to bring: We will provide all necessary equipment and refreshments. All you need to wear is appropriate outdoor clothing (waterproof, long sleeves and trousers – really reccomended for the nettles!!) and sturdy shoes. Also bring your own pair of wellies if you have them. We will have a range of sizes to borrow but can’t guarantee a pair for everyone. 

    Tasks include: Himalayan Balsam pulling 

    Timings: 10am – 3pm (break 11.30am and 1pm for lunch)

    Join the DCRT team for an afternoon of family-friendly bug hunting! Spend some time in Grassmoor’s beautiful wildflower meadow

    About this event

    Little ones and parents can learn together during our family friendly bug hunting sessions. Activities are suitable for children of age 4-11 years and children must be supported by a guardian or parent during the session.

    • Explore the meadow using our equipment and wildlife identification guides
    • Decorate and fill your own bug hotel to take home

    Sessions are 1 hour long. Parents can drop by and leave any time during their pre-booked session. Just come to our stall to sign in and out

    Tickets are free of charge, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund

    Join the Don Catchment Rivers Trust as we tackle the invasive plant species Himalayan Balsam along the banks of the River Rother, helping to increase the diversity of plants and protect the river banks.

    We will be meeting at 10am and finishing at 3pm with breaks for tea and lunch. We will complete a risk assessment on the day to ensure the safety of all volunteers. You will need to bring appropriate outdoor clothing – long sleeves, trousers and sturdy footwear are recommended.

    Please note there is limited parking available at the meeting point. If you intend to drive it would be greatly appreciated if you could park nearby and walk to the meeting point. The Avenue Country Park car park is about a 15 minute walk away (see map below).     • Make a boat out of recycled materials to race down the river

    Children and parents will need wellington boots to explore the river.

  • River Rother & Spital Cemetery Bat Walk

    Join DCRT & the Friends of Spital Cemetery for a bat walk through the cemetery and along the nearby river.

     

    We will be looking for different species of bat, using bat detectors to hear their fantastic calls (which the human ear cannot detect!) Watch and learn how these incredible nocturnal predators hunt for prey and navigate around the landscape.

    We will meet at the Tool House (53.232169, -1.415337) which is a short distance inside the cemetery from the top gates (53.232770, -1.414984). Parking is available on Cemetery Road and inside the cemetery along the avenue of lime trees which lead from the Top Gates to the Chapels. Please wear sturdy shoes. Children are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult. 

    This walk is free but donations to the work of the Friends of Spital Cemetery would be gratefully received.

  • Newfield Spring Woods Volunteer Day – NFM (must book)

    Tasks: natural flood management – including mini-leaky dam installation, gulley-stuffing, willow spiliing, log-jams.

    Please be aware that face coverings are required to be worn for the task as we will be operating within 1m+ social distancing. DCRT are able to provide a clean, disposable facemask. If you would prefer to bring your own face covering to the day you are welcome to.

    Timing: 10am – 3pm

    DCRT staff have been working to make the volunteering experience as safe as possible, with new systems to protect you in place.

    This day will have a limit of 5 volunteers. You will need to book on to sessions in advance and provide details for Track & Trace. An electronic risk assessment and guidance sheet will be sent to your email address before the task.

    All equipment is provided. Volunteers will receive on loan their own hand-gel, gloves and hi-vis from the DCRT team.

    There will be the opportunity for a tea break and lunch during this session.

  • Waymarking Day, Don Valley Way (Doncaster-Conisbrough)

    Join the Friends of the Don Valley Way as we walk the Don Valley Way to replace any missing or damaged way markers along the route.

    We will be meeting at the Doncaster end of the Don Valley Way at 10am and will walk to Conisbrough railway station. It should take 3-4 hours but we can not be sure how long it will take. There are trains from Conisbrough to Doncaster throughout the day however so it should be easy to get back to the start.

    Please wear suitable outdoor clothing and footwear on the day. Volunteers must arrive before 10am as we will be leaving then. Please bring your own lunch and drink for the day as we will not be able to provide refreshments on this day. For more information please contact task leader Anthony Cox on 07384 543124.
