We will be meeting on Wain Avenue at 10am and finishing at 1pm with a break half way through for refreshments. Join the Friends of the Don Valley Way and Rotherham Council for a day of tree-planting at Ickles Lock. We’ll be planting small trees onto a grassland area. The trees are a mixture of native species that will act to support wildlife and provide new woodland habitat at the site. These trees will also help soak up and intercept rainwater, helping to ‘slow the flow’ of water into the navigation during high rainfall events.
Times: 10am-1pm Date: Tuesday 11th January
Where: We are meeting at the small car park off Brinsworth street. Go over the level crossing, then over the bridge over the canal and it’s the second right into the car park. You can use what three words (///dine.formal.axed) to get there: https://what3words.com/dine.formal.axed
Equipment and protective gear, like wellingtons, will be provided for volunteers to borrow on the day. Hot drinks and biccies provided, but please bring your own water and lunch if you’ll need it.
New volunteers are always welcome, but please contact the office before – [email protected]
Join Don Catchment Rivers Trust for a volunteer day on the Rother catchment.
Tasks include: Habitat creation by tree hinging (hedge laying trees into the river channel)
To compliment the large woody debris we installed here last year we will be doing some smaller improvements to the river by essentially hedgelaying marginal trees into the channel to create cover for young fish. Volunteers will need to wear waders and enter the river channel for this task. We will be using small pruning saws to cut the trees. We will provide full equipement and training on the day – no experience is necessary.
Timings: 10am – 1pm (break 11.30am)

Tasks: natural flood management – leaky dam installation
Timing: 10am – 3pm
The main activity of the day will involve building leaky dams of different sizes made out of timber from the woods that are fixed into position across streams. The dams help to slow down flood flows as water levels rise during heavy rainfall. Activities will include digging, sawing, post bashing, moving logs into position and fixing them in place. It’s quite physical work but we have lifting aids to help share the load and will have plenty of breaks and biscuits to help keep energy levels up! Long sleeves, trousers and waterproofs are recommended. All other equipment will be provided.
