Join the Friends of the Don Valley Way as we work to clean up in and around the Meers Brook close to Plowright Drive.
On the day we will be meeting at 10am and finishing at 1pm. We will complete a risk assessment on the day to ensure the safety of all volunteers. We will be stopping half way through for a tea break. On the day you will need to bring appropriate outdoor clothing and sturdy footwear. We can provide wellingtons and waders however we won’t be able to provide footwear for every volunteer.

Join the Friends of the Don Valley Way and Rotherham Council for a day of tree-planting at Ickles Lock. We’ll be planting small trees onto a grassland area. The trees are a mixture of native species that will act to support wildlife and provide new woodland habitat at the site. These trees will also help soak up and intercept rainwater, helping to ‘slow the flow’ of water into the navigation during high rainfall events.
Times: 10am-1pm Date: Tuesday 11th January

Equipment and protective gear, like wellingtons, will be provided for volunteers to borrow on the day. Hot drinks and biccies provided, but please bring your own water and lunch if you’ll need it.

Join the Don Catchment Rivers trust as we cut through the vegetation to create a new path on the Hollingwood Hoops where part of the path has collapsed into the River Rother. Tasks: natural flood management – leaky dam installation
Timing: 10am – 3pm
The main activity of the day will involve building leaky dams of different sizes made out of timber from the woods that is fixed into position across streams. The dams help to slow down flood flows as water levels rise during heavy rainfall. Activities will include digging, sawing, post bashing, moving logs into position and fixing them in place. It’s quite physical work but we have lifting aids to help share the load and will have plenty of breaks and biscuits to help keep energy levels up! Long sleeves, trousers and waterproofs are recommended. All other equipment will be provided.
There are a limited number of spaces available so you will need to book on to sessions in advance.
