SUMMARY:Shire Brook Valley Nature Reserve - BioBlitz
DESCRIPTION:The Don Catchment Rivers Trust will have a stall at the Family BioBlitz Day at Shire Brook Valley Nature Reserve. We will be on the Shire Brook river dipping\, counting up all the different invertebrate species we can find. \nBioBlitz’s are family events where are are trying to discover as many species of plants\, animals and fungi as possible within 24 hours! This helps us learn about the nature in the site and can help inform future schedules of work. This is a fun way for families to learn about nature\, with the help of lots of experts. \nOur river dipping session will take place in the Brook so if you want to have a go at dipping yourself\, please come in wellies. We will be dipping between 11am and 1pm. All nets and other equipment will be provided. Other activities will be happening all over the site so please look at this website for further information. Head over to the visitor centre to start and they can tell you where everything is. \nWhen: Tuesday 21st July 2026\, 11am to 1pm (full event runs 7:30 am to 3:30pm) \nWhere: Shire Brook Valley Nature Reserve\, Stone Lane\, S13 7BR\nFree parking in car park here. DESCRIPTION:Join the Don Catchment Rivers Trust as we help to remove the invasive plant species Himalayan Balsam from the banks of the River Dearne round the back of Hartcliffe Mills.  \n  \nWhen: Thursday 23rd July\, 10am – 1pm \n  \nWhere: We will be working along the banks of the River Dearne behind the mill. We will be meeting right at the back of the car park where the DCRT van will be stationed. Please park your car on Wakefield Road or nearby and walk down as we do not have full access to the car park. Follow orange dashed line in picture below to orange X meeting point. Balsam Bashing will happen at blue X\n\nWhat 3 Words: https://w3w.co/cornering.hurt.test\nGoogle Maps Pin: https://maps.app.goo.gl/78jS4PgMx99RHtBV8 \n  \nWhat to expect: We will be working along banks of the River Dearne\, pulling up Himalayan Balsam and leaving it in piles once we have snaped or crushed it below the bottom node. Paths are not paved around the river and is on a slant. We will have a break at 11:30 for refreshments and biscuits\, provided by DCRT. \n  \nWhat to bring: We provide all of the equipment on the day however please wear suitable clothing for outdoor work including sturdy shoes or boots and long trousers. Even if it is warm weather\, it is advisable to cover up to protect against spiky plants and stings.
