Hadfield Weir
Thanks to funding secured by DCRT, a multi-species fish and eel pass was installed by the trust in partnership with the Environment Agency to restore the ability of fish and other creatures to move more freely within the river system. It took nearly two years of hard work by the Trust to get the project to the construction stage.
Funding was received from the Defra River Improvement Fund, administered by the Rivers Trust. This fund was specifically for projects that contributed towards meeting the objectives of the EU Water Framework Directive (2000) , in which all rivers must achieve Good Ecological Status. It also contributes to the Habitats Directive and the EU Eel Regulations. Additional funding was also secured from the Environment Agency.
The fish pass was designed by Mike & Matt Beach, Fish Pass Consultants and was built by A Torn Construction and project managed by Turner & Townsend on behalf of DCRT. British Land and Meadowhall Shopping Centre kindly allowed use of their facilities and will be ensuring the long-term maintenance of the pass now that it is completed.
