DCRT have been awarded £154,000 funding from the Dearne Valley Landscape Partnership and Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council for the Dearne Connectivity Project.  After the fantastic recent news about a juvenile salmon being found in the Dearne for the first time in almost 200 years, our project will help fish move more freely in the Dearne and in particular help salmonid species (salmon and trout) migrate further up the river than has been possible in the last couple of centuries due to the number of weirs and obstacles in the river.

Lower Weir, River Dearne at Old Moor

Lower Weir, River Dearne at Old Moor

We will be creating fish passage facilities over Bolton upon Dearne weir and Old Moor lower weir (or Bolton Ings weir) and installing some flow deflectors to enhance the habitat below Old Moor.  Barriers in the river like the one pictured above make it difficult for any fish to move freely in the river.  By attaching baffles to the face of the weir we will be slowing the water down which will allow stronger swimming fish to ascend the weir.
