    Wetland Bird Survey at Fishlake

    What to bring: Walking boots or wellies that you don’t mind getting a bit muddy! Bring binoculars if you have them.
    DCRT will bring the clipboards, survey forms and identification sheets.

     

    What to expect: Identifying wading and wetland birds can be tricky, so please ask if you are unsure and share your knowledge with others if you know any tips and tricks! These events are great opportunities to practise and learn birding skills, as well as contributing to the BTO’s Core Counts records (read more about core counts here)

    Nature Counts: Wardsend Cemetery Bird Survey

    Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust, DCRT and the friends of Wardsend Cemetery have teamed up to collect Data for Nature as part of the Heritage Lottery Funded Data for Nature project.
    We’ll be hosting monthly bird surveys in the Cemetery and on the riverside to help collect data and monitor birdlife in the area. If you have birding skills we’d really appreciate your help surveying, or if you are a beginner come along to practise your skills!

    Christmas Walk - St Oswalds Church, Kirk Sandall

    Join the Don Catchment Rivers Trust as we go on a festive walk along the River Don and the Canal in Doncaster. This walk will be a distance of roughly 4.7 miles. All abilities are welcome however we are likley to be walking through feilds with livestock in them so dogs are not advised to come on these walks. We will also have to cross some stiles on this walk. 

    Where: We will be meeting in the car park at St Oswalds Church in Kirk Sandall where we will also finish the walk (please note that parking is limited so please share a vehicle where possible or use public transport).     When: We will be meeting at 10:30am and will finish around 1:30pm (please note this is a rough estimate and this walk may be longer or shorter) on Tuesday 17th December 2024.

    What to bring: Please wear suitable clothing for the weather and for walking. The surface is mostly unpaved soplease ensure you bring walking boots or shoes to wear. You will need to bring along your own water and sandwich if you would like one. We will also provide a warm drink at the end of the walk. 

    Public Transport Information: Kirk Sandall Railway station is only a short walk from the start point of walk. There is a train from Doncaster at 9:05am which should arrive in Kirk Sandall by 10:11am which allows pleanty of tme to walk to the meeting point. Alternativley you can catch the number 474 bus to Barnby Dun and get off near Kirk Sandall Station.

    Hexthorpe Ings - Wetland restoration

    Join the Don Catchment Rivers Trust as we work to daylight and restore the wetland at Hexthorpe Ings. This day is a part of the All Hands on the Don project. 

    When: Wednesday 18th December 2024 10am – 3pm

    What to bring: We provide all of the equipment on the day, however please wear suitable clothing for outdoor work including sturdy shoes or boots and long trousers. We can provide wellingtons to borrow on the day, but please let us know in advance by emailing [email protected] or contacting Volunteering Officer Anthony Cox. Please bring your own packed lunch if you would like to stay for the whole day. 

    What are we doing: On the day we will be removing scrub and trees to help the site reamain wet and prevent it from becoming woodland, as well as increasing the sunlight reaching the wetland, to help encourage more plants to grow and increase biodiversity.

    Jessops Riverside - Clean Up

    Join the Don Catchment Rivers Trust as we work to remove litter in and along the River Don in Sheffield. We will be aiming to remove large debris off the banks and bring it onto the road. We will be accessing the river by climbing over a fence and onto the vegetation or using a ladder to go down the. Confidence/competence to walk on uneven surfaces or use the ladder is required for this activity.

     

    When: Thursday 19th December 2024, 10am – 1pm

     

    Where: We will be meeting at the Brightside Steelworks arch. There is limited free parking here as it is a business estate – please car share where possible. There is a small amount adjacent to this arch or further down the road.

    What to bring: We provide all of the equipment on the day however please wear suitable clothing for outdoor work including sturdy shoes or boots and long trousers.     What to expect: We will be working along the banks of the river, collecting litter and bringing it back up to the road. We will aim to remove large items of litter from in the river but will evaluate the safety of this on the day as this is the main river Don. We will have a break at 11:30 am for refreshments and biscuits, provided by DCRT.
