Many rivers and streams around the Don Catchment have been culverted i.e. hidden away underground. This isn’t surprising given the severe pollution of the past that left some little better than sewers. Another consequence of historic pollution was that our cities and towns ‘turned their backs’ on the rivers, and there was little point in providing public access. Thankfully times have changed and at DCRT we believe that culverted rivers should be ‘daylighted’ and public access should be provided so people can enjoy these green and recovering ecosystems.
Here are our Position Statements on deculverting and public access that we have written to support the good work of those who are promoting deculverting and public access in the Don Catchment.
