    Wetland Bird Survey at Fishlake

    What to bring: Walking boots or wellies that you don’t mind getting a bit muddy! Bring binoculars if you have them.
    DCRT will bring the clipboards, survey forms and identification sheets.

     

    What to expect: Identifying wading and wetland birds can be tricky, so please ask if you are unsure and share your knowledge with others if you know any tips and tricks! These events are great opportunities to practise and learn birding skills, as well as contributing to the BTO’s Core Counts records (read more about core counts here)
    Refreshments (hot drinks) provided at the end of the event

    Sprotbrough - Butterfly and Dragonfly Survey

    Hollingwood Hoops - Heritage Walk and Clean Up

    This month we will be continuing to walk our Heritage Walks around the catchment, checking on our waymarking signs, picking up litter and learning about the catchment history as we go. 

     

    What to expect:

    Join us to walk the 2.5 mile Hollingwood Hoop, developed as part of a previous DCRT National Lottery Fund project named ‘Hidden Heritage Secret Streams‘. The route follows the Chesterfield Canal and then loops back via the River Rother. 

     

    As part of our volunteer day we will be checking the status of the way markers and updating them if necessary with new ones. We will also do some litter picking along the way and potentially some vegetation management along the footpath. We will also stop to take in the history of the route and to look out for nature! All equipment (gloves, litter pickers, bin bags) will be provided. A tea break will be provided by DCRT too. 

     

    The walk is mostly flat, but sections may get muddy, so please wear appropriate footwear.

    Grading: Easy Circular walk, several stiles

    Walk Mill Island - Clean Up

    Join the Don Catchment Rivers Trust and the Friends of the Blue Loop as we help to clean up litter on Walk Mill Island in the River Don. 

     

    DCRT are teaming up with Friends of the Blue Loop who look after the stretch of river from Victoria Quays to Meadowhall. We will be using a ladder to go down the wall onto Walk Mill Island at Effingham Street, and hauling up the litter using ropes and ton sacs. Confidence/competence to use the ladder is required for this activity.

     

    When: Friday 27th September 2024, 10am-1pm.

     

    Where: We will be meeting at the junction of Effingham Street and Furnival Road, S10 1AA. Free parking is available on Effingham Street.

    What to bring: We provide all of the equipment on the day however please wear suitable clothing for outdoor work including sturdy shoes or boots and long trousers. We can provide wellingtons to borrow on the day but please let us know in advance by emailing [email protected] or contacting task leader Charlotte Landry-Jennings. We provide a tea break for refreshments.
