12:30 -14:00 14-07-25 Grassmoor Country Park, Birkin Lane, Chesterfield, S42 5DA  This year we will be continuing our butterfly surveys at Grassmoor Country Park as part of the UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme. Come along to our monthly session where we will be following a set transect line across the park, counting, identifying and recording what butterfly species we spot. You do not have to have previous experience in butterfly identification as we will have a mixed ability group and visual training aids to help us in the field. These DCRT led surveys will be occurring on the second Monday of every month. If you enjoy the transect, you could look at taking ownership of the survey once a month and contributing to our target of a full 26 week dataset! This will involve sending your observations to Charlotte at DCRT who will submit them to UKBMS. If you are interested in taking on this citizen science project, come along to a session or contact Charlotte via [email protected] for more information. IMPORTANT NOTE: Butterfly surveys are best carried out on bright sunny days so be prepared for this event to be cancelled in rainy weather. 21 - Nature Counts: Wardsend Cemetery Butterfly Survey

Himalayan Balsam outcompetes native flora and results in bare river banks over winter which can increase erosion and flood risk. We’ll be pulling out the plants and snapping above the roots to prevent regrowth. This work goes hand in hand with our efforts to slow flows through the woods at Priory farm using leaky barriers of varying shapes and sizes which we’ll continue with later in the year. What to expect: We will be walking along the paths along the river, pulling up Himalayan Balsam and leaving it in piles once we have snaped or crushed it below the bottom node. Bring binoculars if you have them. DCRT will bring the clipboards, survey forms and identification sheets. What to expect: Identifying butterflies and dragonflies can be tricky, so please ask if you are unsure and share your knowledge with others if you know any tips and tricks! These events are great opportunities to practise and learn ID skills, as well as contributing to county records Refreshments (hot drinks) provided at the end of the event. Joining us? | 31 - Blonk Street – Clean Up
10:00 -13:00 31-07-25 Cannot determine address at this location.  Join the Don Catchment Rivers Trust as we work to remove litter in and along the River Don in Sheffield. We will be aiming to remove litter from the river banks. We will be accessing the river by the slope down from the footpath. When: Thursday 31st July, 10am – 1pm Where: We will be meeting in Windrush Way car park. This car park is small and fills up easily. Please do wait at the meeting place in case I have difficultly parking the van. For volunteers, I would recommend the Victoria Quays car park which is relatively cheap but a 5 min walk to the meet up point. Alternatively there is the NCP Blonk Street which is just the other side of the river so a shorter walk but more expensive. Either way, please claim back your travel expenses!
