Heritage Walks

Hatfield Colliery

For centuries this river has shaped life in the Don Valley. Long before the pit wheels turned at Hatfield Main, these waters powered mills, irrigated farmland, and carried goods through the region.

But in the twentieth century, Hatfield would become known for something else entirely - coal.

Hexthorpe Riverside Retreat

Welcome to Hexthorpe — once a place where the people of Doncaster escaped the bustle of the town for fresh air, music, and riverside leisure.

In the late Victorian and Edwardian era, parks like this were designed as places of relaxation and entertainment. Families would arrive in their finest clothes, strolling beneath trees, enjoying picnics, boating, and outdoor performances.

Don Aqueduct Circular

This gentle waterside trail explores the remarkable network of canals and waterways that helped shape the industrial landscape of South Yorkshire.

You’ll follow quiet lanes, historic waterways, and rural paths before crossing one of the most impressive engineering features on the route — the Don Aqueduct, where the canal crosses high above the River Don.
