January | 1 - Meers Brook – River Rescue
10:00 -13:00 01-02-22 Cannot determine address at this location.  Join the Friends of the Don Valley Way as we work to clean up in and around the Meers Brook close to Plowright Drive. On the day we will be meeting at 10am and finishing at 1pm. We will complete a risk assessment on the day to ensure the safety of all volunteers. We will be stopping half way through for a tea break. On the day you will need to bring appropriate outdoor clothing and sturdy footwear. We can provide wellingtons and waders however we won’t be able to provide footwear for every volunteer. 7 | 8 - Ickles Lock – Tree Planting POSTPONED (now a litter-pick)
10:00 -13:00 08-02-22 Brinsworth St, Rotherham S60 1AB, UK Please note this date has been postponed due to the woodland officer being off with covid – we will now be running a litter-pick Join the Friends of the Don Valley Way and Rotherham Council for a day of tree-planting at Ickles Lock. We’ll be planting small trees onto a grassland area. The trees are a mixture of native species that will act to support wildlife and provide new woodland habitat at the site. These trees will also help soak up and intercept rainwater, helping to ‘slow the flow’ of water into the navigation during high rainfall events. Times: 10am-1pm Date: Tuesday 11th January Where: We are meeting at the small car park off Brinsworth street. Go over the level crossing, then over the bridge over the canal and it’s the second right into the car park. | 9 - Hollingwood Hoops – Vegetation Clearance
10:00 -13:00 09-02-22 South Street North, off Station Lane, New Whittington, Chesterfield , S43 2QE Join the Don Catchment Rivers trust as we cut through the vegetation to create a new path on the Hollingwood Hoops where part of the path has collapsed into the River Rother. We will be starting at 10am and working until the path is complete with breaks for refreshments. If you are not yet signed up as a volunteer email [email protected] to register. Also feel free to bring your own pair of wellies/waders if you have them. We will have a range of sizes to borrow but can’t guarantee a pair for everyone. Tasks vary but include: Woody debris installation, scrub control/wetland management, access improvements, natural flood management. | 18 | 19 - Newfield Spring Woods (Moss Valley) – NFM Volunteer Day (must book)

Tasks: natural flood management – leaky dam installation Timing: 10am – 3pm The main activity of the day will involve building leaky dams of different sizes made out of timber from the woods that is fixed into position across streams. The dams help to slow down flood flows as water levels rise during heavy rainfall. Activities will include digging, sawing, post bashing, moving logs into position and fixing them in place. It’s quite physical work but we have lifting aids to help share the load and will have plenty of breaks and biscuits to help keep energy levels up! Long sleeves, trousers and waterproofs are recommended. All other equipment will be provided. There are a limited number of spaces available so you will need to book on to sessions in advance. 28 - Data4Nature at Wardsend Cemetery: Bird Survey
10:00 -12:00 28-02-22 1A Club Mill Rd, Sheffield S6 2FH, UK  Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust, DCRT and the friends of Wardsend Cemetery have teamed up to collect Data for Nature as part of the Heritage Lottery Funded Data for Nature project. We’ll be hosting monthly bird surveys in the Cemetery and on the riverside to help collect data and monitor birdlife in the area If you have birding skills we’d really appreciate your help surveying, or if you are a beginner come along to practise your skills!
