2 | 3 - Parkgate – Volunteer Day
10:00 -13:00 03-05-22 Stonerow Way, Parkgate, Rotherham S60 1SG, UK  Join the Friends of the Don Valley Way as we work to clean up the Don Valley Way along the tow path of the canal. On the day we will be meeting at 10am and finishing at 1pm. We will be meeting on Stonerow way, next to the bridge over the railway. We will complete a risk assessment on the day to ensure the safety of all volunteers. We will be stopping half way through for a tea break. On the day you will need to bring appropriate outdoor clothing and sturdy footwear. We can provide wellingtons and waders however we won’t be able to provide footwear for every volunteer. 10:00 -13:00 05-05-22 New Whittington, Chesterfield S43 2BZ Join the Don Catchment Rivers Trust for a volunteer day to improve walking routes along River Rother. All abilities welcome! Timings: 10am – 3pm with a break in the morning and for lunch. Feel free to come to part of the day if required. What to bring: We will provide all necessary equipment and refreshments. All you need to wear is appropriate outdoor clothing and sturdy shoes. Bring lunch if you’re staying out the whole day. Tasks include:We’ll be doing some vegetation clearance along a riverside path using hand tools. We’ll also be doing our usual sweep with a litter picker. 16 - POSTPONED Data4Nature at Wardsend Cemetery: Bird Survey
10:00 -12:00 16-05-22 1A Club Mill Rd, Sheffield S6 2FH, UK  Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust, DCRT and the friends of Wardsend Cemetery have teamed up to collect Data for Nature as part of the Heritage Lottery Funded Data for Nature project. We’ll be hosting monthly bird surveys in the Cemetery and on the riverside to help collect data and monitor birdlife in the area If you have birding skills we’d really appreciate your help surveying, or if you are a beginner come along to practise your skills! | 17 - Spring Wildflower & Bluebell Walk

Please book on to this walk through the Chesterfield Walking Festival Join Don Catchment Rivers Trust for a Spring wildflower walk through Chesterfield’s Ancient West Wood and see a dazzling display of bluebells. The West Wood includes some of the last remaining pockets of ancient woodland in Chesterfield. Some of the trees have been growing undisturbed here for over four hundred years. Ancient woodland over time has developed special communities of plants and animals that are not found elsewhere. In Spring beautiful English bluebells carpet the woodland floor, wild garlic grows along the Trough Brook and wood anemone’s star-like flowers can be spotted. On this walk we will be exploring Ringwood Park and the West Wood. Please be prepared for a very hilly walk with a few steep climbs – worth it for the lovely views! The ground can be muddy and slippery when wet, with lots of steps and slopes. There is also a small ford to cross, so please be prepared to leap over the brook or wear waterproof boots.

Tasks vary but include: Woody debris installation, scrub control/wetland management, access improvements, natural flood management. A fantastic trail for spotting nature and learning about the industrial heritage of Chesterfield. Please note the walk can sometimes be overgrown in places and the riverside footpath, which although is mostly flat, can be tricky underfoot. This walk is best suited to more adventurous walkers – good boots and long trousers are essential.

Tasks: River & vegetation surveys Timing: 10am – 3pm We will be carrying out surveys around the leaky barriers we’ve been installing to slow flows during heavy rainfall to help us get a better understanding of if and how these barriers influence the vegetation around the dams and the river channel.
