| 8 | 9 - Queens Park – Clean Up
10:00 -11:30 09-10-25 Cannot determine address at this location. As part of DCRT’s ‘Hidden Heritage Secret Streams’ National Lottery Heritage Fund project that came to a close a few years ago, volunteers took on a legacy project to keep up the momentum of environmental volunteering in Chesterfield. Members from Transition Chesterfield team hosted a monthly litter pick, operating out of Queens Park in the town centre. They sorted the litter into categories to survey what our biggest polluters were. As their time on the project has also come to an end, DCRT are adopting their schedule! We will be surveying the litter we collect, and reporting our finds to the Preventing Plastic Pollution scheme. This contributes to a nationwide set of data about litter. We will be returning to Queens Park on the second Thursday of every other month. On the alternate months, we will be focusing our efforts elsewhere in Chesterfield so please check the events calendar for more details. What: Litter picking along the footpath and cycle routes in and around the Queens Park. This will help remove litter from the environment that may cause harm to wildlife and before it reaches our river systems too. We will be walking on paved areas and not heading into any rivers on this occasion. When: Thursday 9th October 10 – 11:30am Where: Queens Park, Chesterfield, S40 2JX. We will meet at the superbin on the footpath behind the cricket pavilion. Check specific location using links below. 10:30 -15:30 22-10-25 Cannot determine address at this location. Extended Riverfly Survey Day on the Went – Wednesday 22nd October, starting at 10.30am.
Come and try out the extended riverfly survey method and help investigate pollution issues on the Went. Our 3rd survey of the Went A1 Viaduct Outfalls aims to collect further data to better understand how the pollution from the A1 viaduct impacts the river Went.We will be using the Extended Riverfly survey method looking for 33 groups of freshwater invertebrate Come and try out the extended survey method and up your identification skills at the same time! What is the Extended method? Extended Riverfly is intended for people who already have a few years’ experience in using RMI. They should already be familiar with the basic eight RMI target groups and have got know many of the other river invertebrate groups. Extended Riverfly is an expansion of the original RMI method that uses 33 invertebrate groups, including the basic eight RMI groups. It includes most of the major groups of macroinvertebrates you are likely to find in your samples and gives more nuanced idea of what is going on in the river than RMI; the river’s quality, possible stressors and its biodiversity. Rather than being a replacement for the monthly RMI sampling, Extended Riverfly is best used on a seasonal (especially spring and autumn) or annual basis to assess, for example, the performance of river restorations or the impacts of outfalls. This survey day will help you gain the skills to become an Extended Riverfly Surveyor (please note you will need to attend at least 2 training surveys to get signed off as an extended RMI monitor). For more information about the Extended Riverfly scheme: https://www.riverflies.org/extended-riverfly-intro-2024 Before the day – please watch the training powerpoint lecture ahead of the day and complete the short online quiz Where: Meet outside St John’s Church to walk down to the survey site as a group (10 min walk) Parking is best on the road near the Wentbridge House Hotel, rather than by the church which is on a very narrow track.
Access: Nearest toilets are at Wentbridge House Hotel. You won’t be expected to go into the river, but please wrap up very warm for a day in the cold!
Times: 10:30 – 15:30 10:30-11:00: Teas and coffees, intro to the day and the extended scheme 11:00- 13:00: Work together to identify first sample, record results 13:00-13:30: Break for lunch and refreshments 13:30 -15:30: Collect and identify second sample, record results Please RSVP so we know to wait for you at the Church and in case of cancellation
Cancellation: If it’s heavily raining or the river levels have risen we will postpone the event. Please check your emails before the event as we will decide this by 9am on the day.
