    Bat Field Survey 2 - Canklow Wood

    Join us as we survey the bats in the Canklow Woods area. Help us record the sightings of Noctules, Serotine, and Pipistrelle Bats.

    Please wear suitable clothing for outdoor work and if possible please bring a torch. End times may vary depending on how quickly we complete the survey. We are meeting at 21:05 and will be setting off at 21:11. Spaces are limited so please get in contact via [email protected] or get in contact with survey leader Anthony Cox on 07384 543124. Trust Volunteers will be prioritised over the general public.

    Wildlife Wednesdays - Moss Valley

    Join Don Catchment Rivers Trust volunteer days aimed at restoring the riverine environment. All abilities welcome!

    Timings: 10am – 3pm with a break for lunch and refreshments. Feel free to come to part of the day if required. 

    What to bring: We will provide all necessary equipment and refreshments. All you need to wear is appropriate outdoor clothing and sturdy shoes.

    Tasks include: We will be concentrating on removing the invasive weed Himalayan Balsam all along the Moss catchment by pulling up the plant which has very shallow root systems.

    Location: The meeting point will change each week depending on how far along the river we have made progress. Sign-up as a volunteer under ‘catchment volunteer’ here to receive updated meeting points.

    Join Don Catchment Rivers Trust for a volunteer day cleaning-up the River Rother. All abilities welcome!

    Location: Holbeck Close, at the junction of Brimington Road end. 

    What to bring: We will provide all necessary equipment and refreshments. All you need to wear is appropriate outdoor clothing (waterproof, long sleeves and trousers) and sturdy shoes.

    Tasks include: Litter picking, debris removal, vegetation maintenance, invasive species management and access improvements.

    Timings: Day runs 10am – 1pm but feel free to come whenever suits. We have a tea break around 11.30am.

    Citizen Science: Identification Workshop

    In this workshop we will be sorting and identifying samples of freshwater invertebrate specimens, with a particular focus on identifying families.
    The task will be working through collected samples, sorting the inverts into taxa and then identifying to family where possible.

    The data is all going into our citizen science research project to monitor the benefits of river restoration work.

    Volunteer Training: Water Plant ID

    Sign-up to our Water Plant Identification workshop with ecologist Julie Riley along the Chesterfield Canal.

    This training is perfect for beginners, those with an interest in plants or those wanting to improve their botany skills. We will be using field guides and fold-out charts to help identify the in-channel and marginal plant species we come across. 

    The day will run 10am – 12.30pm. We will start and finish at the Hollingwood Hub, Chesterfield, S43 2PF. We will provide free refreshments during break and will have lunch after the session so feel free to bring a packed lunch alternatively Katey’s Coffee Shop will be open if you wanted to buy something. 

    Access is very good along the canal towpath for those with restricted mobility.
