4 - Waymarking – Don Valley Way (Rotherham Station – Meadowhall Station)
13:00 -15:00 04-04-22 Cannot determine address at this location. Join the Friends of the Don Valley Way as we walk the Don Valley Way to replace any missing or damaged way markers along the route. We will be meeting at Rotherham Railway Station and progressing along the Don Valley Way at 1pm and will walk to Meadowhall Railway Station. It should take 2-3 hours but we can not be sure how long it will take. There are trains from Meadowhall to Rotherham throughout the day however so it should be easy to get back to the start. Please wear suitable outdoor clothing and footwear on the day. Volunteers must arrive before 1pm as we will be leaving then. Please bring your own lunch and drink for the day as we will not be able to provide refreshments on this day. We will be meeting at 10am and finishing at 1pm with a break for refreshments half way through. We will complete a risk assessment on the day to assure the safety of all volunteers. You can sign up to be a citizen scientist here or email [email protected] to come along to the day Join us for a day on the River Rother collecting freshwater invertebrates using the kick sampling method from the riverbed. We’ll identify invertebrates such as mayfly, caddisfly, freshwater shrimp, leeches and flatworms during the day – the assemblage and diversity of these tiny creatures can give an indication of the health of the river. 11 - Data4Nature at Wardsend Cemetery: Bird Survey
10:00 -12:00 11-04-22 1A Club Mill Rd, Sheffield S6 2FH, UK  Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust, DCRT and the friends of Wardsend Cemetery have teamed up to collect Data for Nature as part of the Heritage Lottery Funded Data for Nature project. We’ll be hosting monthly bird surveys in the Cemetery and on the riverside to help collect data and monitor birdlife in the area If you have birding skills we’d really appreciate your help surveying, or if you are a beginner come along to practise your skills! An evening course delivered by Principal Ecologist and bat expert Robert Bell on how to identify, record and survey the bat species found around rivers in Chesterfield. The evening will finish with a dusk bat walk around the river Hipper and Walton Dam, where we will practise using bat detectors to identify different species by their characteristic sounds. 25 | 26 - Bentley Mill Dike – Volunteer Day
10:00 -13:00 26-04-22 Limbreck Court, Bentley,Doncaster DN5 0HR  Join the Friends of the Don Valley Way as we work to clean the Bentley Mill Dike. We will be working both in the channel and along the banks of the stream. When: Meeting at 10am and finishing at 1pm. Where: Parking is on Limbreck Court road. There is other on street parking in the area and free parking at the pavilion. Just be careful when crossing the busy main road! Task for the day: We will start the day with a tool talk and risk assessment. We’ll then make our way up stream removing litter and debris from the Mill Dike. Waders, life jackets and protective gear is provided to volunteers. If you are litter picking around the river (not wading) we recommend wearing sturdy shoes and clothing suitable for outdoor work. All waders and shoes are cleaned at the end of the day. Teabreak: We will be stopping half way through for a tea break, refreshments are provided. | 27 - Newfield Spring Woods (Moss Valley) – NFM Volunteer Day (must book)

Tasks: natural flood management – leaky dam maintenance Timing: 10am – 3pm The day will involve tasks such as maintenance of the leaky dams and mini-dams installed on previous volunteer days in the woods that help to slow the flow of storm waters and building new mini-dams. This involves activities including clearing the debris and silt that has built up behind the dams following storms and increasing the height of mini-dams by sawing and fixing small timbers across ditches. Please do join us if you like getting your hands dirty and having a good work out! Long sleeves, trousers and waterproofs are recommended. All other equipment will be provided. There are a limited number of spaces available so you will need to book on to sessions in advance.
